ORLANDO, Fla. — Homeowners in Orlando, Florida, are facing insurance policy cancellations based on drone and aerial photos, a tactic increasingly used by insurers nationwide.
One such case involves John D’Entremont, a Malden homeowner, who received a surprising letter from his insurer after 40 years of coverage. As reported by WFTV9, the letter highlighted several property issues, including moss on the roof, overhanging tree branches, and the need for shingles. D’Entremont promptly sought estimates, completed the necessary repairs, and kept his insurance agent informed. Despite his efforts, his policy was canceled last November.
Under Massachusetts law, insurers must provide a 45-day written notice before canceling a policy, along with specific reasons for the decision. While D’Entremont’s insurer complied with these requirements, he had never filed a claim and was unaware of any property defects.
WFTV9 also reported on Emily Rogan, from the consumer advocacy organization United Policyholders, who noted that the increased use of technology, including drones and satellite imagery, has made such actions by insurers more common. Insurers have greater access to data about policyholders and their properties, using this information to assess risk.
The Massachusetts Division of Insurance website confirms that aerial images can be used during policy renewal decisions. Reports from 2019, 2021, and 2022 indicate a rise in policy cancellations and non-renewals post-pandemic, attributed to actions taken by insurers.
Rogan advised homeowners who receive cancellation notices to ask their insurer for the photos and reasons behind the decision. She also recommended proving pending repairs through contracts and immediately shopping for a new insurer, as different companies have varying underwriting guidelines.
Considering these developments, homeowners are encouraged to stay vigilant with home maintenance, as insurers can take photos at any time. A proactive approach can help mitigate the risk of policy cancellations.
